  1. 1489-1556. English cleric, archbishop of
  2. Canterbury from 1533. A Protestant convert,
  3. under Edward VI he helped to shape the
  4. doctrines of the Church of England. Condemned
  5. for heresy under the Catholic Mary Tudor, he
  6. at first recanted, but when his life was not
  7. spared, resumed his position and was burned
  8. at the stake, first holding to the fire the
  9. hand which had signed his recantation. He was
  10. responsible for the issue of the Prayer Books
  11. of 1549 and 1552, and supported the
  12. succession of Lady Jane Grey. Cranmer
  13. suggested in 1529 that the question of Henry
  14. VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon should
  15. be referred to the universities of Europe
  16. rather than to the Pope, and in 1533 he
  17. declared it null and void.
